Features

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a brain stimulation technique that has been available for several decades; the procedure was earlier described as brain polarization. As presently practised, it involves the delivery of a very small direct current (about 1-3 mA) for a brief period (about 20 min) through appropriately-sized electrodes, one or both of which are placed upon the scalp.

Although tDCS has not been formally approved for any clinical indication, it has been experimentally used with some success in a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders ranging from depression to refractory auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia. tDCS is very well tolerated.

The last decade has witnessed an explosion of research in the field, with nearly a thousand hits emerging from PubMed, alone.
